This is Ecuador

Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Sarah who had always been fascinated by the diverse cultures and natural beauty of South America. She decided to take a gap year after finishing college to explore the continent and make a difference through volunteer work.

Sarah chose Ecuador as her first destination, and upon arrival, she was thrilled to start volunteering as an English teacher for elementary school kids in a small village outside of Quito. She quickly fell in love with the children's enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.

During her time off, Sarah took the opportunity to explore some of Ecuador's most famous destinations. She visited Cotopaxi National Park, where she hiked to the base of the majestic Cotopaxi volcano and marveled at its snow-capped peak. She also traveled to Otavalo, famous for its bustling indigenous market, where she picked up some beautiful handcrafted souvenirs.

One weekend, Sarah and a group of fellow volunteers decided to take a bike ride from Banos to Puyo, a scenic route that winds through lush rainforest and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. They stopped at several small towns along the way, sampling local delicacies and meeting friendly locals.

Another highlight of Sarah's Ecuador adventure was taking the train from Riobamba to the Devil's Nose, a thrilling ride that zigzags down steep mountain slopes and offers spectacular views of the Andean landscape.

Sarah's gap year in Ecuador was a life-changing experience, and she returned home with a newfound appreciation for the beauty of nature, the warmth of diverse cultures, and the power of education to change lives.

Spain

In the summer of 2002, I embarked on an exciting journey that would shape my future. As a college intern with Appalachian State University, I had the incredible opportunity to work for Disney España. My destination was Madrid, Spain, where I would live and immerse myself in the vibrant culture.

My temporary home was located near the Iglesia stop, allowing me to explore the city with ease. Madrid's Plaza Mayor became one of my favorite spots, a bustling square filled with energy and history. I would often relax there, sipping on refreshing glasses of sangria and indulging in delicious tapas.

One weekend, I decided to venture outside Madrid to experience the famous Pamplona bull run. The thrill and adrenaline of the event were like nothing I had ever experienced before. The bustling streets of Pamplona filled with both locals and tourists, eager to witness this age-old tradition. As the bulls charged through the narrow streets, I couldn't help but marvel at the bravery and tradition displayed before me.

Throughout the summer, my internship at Disney España was a valuable learning experience. I worked alongside talented individuals, gaining insights into the entertainment industry and honing my skills. The internship not only expanded my professional horizons but also allowed me to develop lifelong friendships with colleagues from different backgrounds.

Living in Madrid was a dream come true. The city's lively atmosphere, vibrant nightlife, and rich history captivated me. From strolling through the picturesque neighborhoods to attending cultural events, every day was an opportunity to immerse myself in the Spanish way of life.

As my summer in Madrid drew to a close, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible memories I had created. The summer of 2002 had been a transformative time, shaping my passion for international experiences and fostering a deeper appreciation for different cultures.

With a heart full of gratitude and a mind brimming with new perspectives, I bid farewell to Madrid and returned home, carrying with me the cherished memories and lessons that would stay with me for a lifetime.

Mother's Day Card

Here is what I entered:

I want to send a mother's card to my mom

To my mom, Carol.

I am her son, Brent.

I am the youngest of her three sons.

Even though, Jeff, the eldest, still runs a newspaper route.

And Todd, the middle-brother, defeated Medusa

It was Brent, the youngest, that allowed chatGPT to write you a (hopefully) silly Mother's Day Card.

I remember you:

When I was scared and didn't want to go kindergarten class

you giving me little gifts, like Stars Wars and Transformers action fictures, and more, and wouldn't cry as she left

winterstom car wreck going to take dad his bowling shirt

you kept me calm

grounding me for the things I was caught for

and you did't catch half of it

Ryhym

when i was out playing and stuff, scuffed up myself in the dirt

you were always there putting band-aids on me when I got hurt

no matter what Dad, Jeff, and Todd have said or maybe done

I was the baby and will alway be #1

Hopefully this won't get cut -----

But I love you a bunch and so do wel all!

Here is what I got...

Dear Mom, Carol,

On this special day, I wanted to take a moment to celebrate the amazing mother that you are. As your youngest son, Brent, I am grateful for the love and support you have always shown me. While Jeff, the eldest, defeated Medusa and Todd, the middle brother, has his own accomplishments, it's me, the youngest, who's using ChatGPT to write you a (hopefully) silly Mother's Day Card.

From my earliest memories, you have showered me with love and care. I remember those days when you would give me little gifts, like Star Wars and Transformers figures, to make me excited about going to kindergarten. And if I promised not to cry as you left, you would surprise me with even more treasures. Your encouragement and thoughtfulness made every day an adventure.

I'll never forget that winter storm car wreck when you braved the elements just to take Dad his bowling shirt. Your dedication and determination always leave me in awe. You've taught me the importance of family and going above and beyond for the people we love.

Sure, there were times when I got caught doing things I shouldn't have, and you grounded me. I may not have appreciated it then, but looking back, I realize it was for my own good. Your discipline helped me learn from my mistakes and become a better person.

But what stands out the most are the simple moments we shared. When I was out playing and inevitably ended up scuffed up in the dirt, you were always there, ready with a band-aid and a comforting smile. Your nurturing nature and unwavering support have been a constant presence in my life.

Mom, you are an incredible woman, and I am so lucky to call you my mother. Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do for our family. Your love and guidance have shaped me into the person I am today.

On this Mother's Day, I want to express my deepest gratitude and wish you a day filled with laughter, joy, and relaxation. You deserve all the happiness in the world.

With all my love,

Brent
